4Drivers LG TV Generic

TVIR (infrared)4drivers.com.br

Overview

Controls LG TVs (webOS and earlier lines) from Control4 using infrared only, with no dependency on the TV's network. Intended for projects where the TV must not be controlled over IP.

Requirements

Enabling the TV's Quick Start option (Quick Start+ / Always Ready, depending on the model) is recommended. The TV powers on faster and accepts commands right after.

Installation in Composer

  1. Add the 4Drivers LG TV Generic driver to the project.
  2. Fill in the license key in Chave (or leave "Trial" while testing).
  3. In Connections, bind the driver's IR Sensor connection to the controller IR output where the TV emitter is attached.
  4. Bind the video sources to the driver inputs (HDMI 1 to HDMI 4, TV ANT, INPUT AV 1) according to the physical wiring.
  5. For apps, add the Control4 universal mini drivers (Netflix, Globoplay, etc.) and bind each one to the matching MiniApp connection (see the table below).
  6. Test power on, power off and input switching. If the TV is slow to accept the first command after powering on, increase Power On Delay-Milliseconds.

Streaming apps

The driver opens apps in two ways: through the app keys of the LG remote and through the TV Quick Access feature. In both cases, when the app is selected in Control4, the driver first takes the TV to the home screen (Home Before App property) and then opens the app.

1. Apps with a key on the LG remote

Just bind the app's universal mini driver to the matching connection:

ConnectionApp
MiniApp 0 - GLOBOPLAYGloboplay
MiniApp 1 - NETFLIXNetflix
MiniApp 3 - PRIME VIDEOPrime Video
MiniApp 5 - DISNEY+Disney+
MiniApp 6 - LG CHANNELSLG Channels
These keys depend on the TV model and region. If one of them does not work on your TV, use Quick Access for that app.

2. Quick Access 1 to 8 (any app or input)

For apps with no key on the LG remote, such as YouTube, Spotify, Apple TV and Max (or the ones that did not work above), the driver has 8 connections: Quick Access 1 to Quick Access 8.

How it works: on LG TVs, each remote number from 1 to 8, when held down, opens the app (or input) assigned to it on the TV itself. When the user selects the source bound to the Quick Access N connection, the driver sends number N held down, and the TV opens the app assigned to that number.

ConnectionThe driver sendsThe TV opens
Quick Access 1Number 1 held downThe app assigned to number 1 on the TV
Quick Access 2Number 2 held downThe app assigned to number 2 on the TV
Quick Access 3Number 3 held downThe app assigned to number 3 on the TV
Quick Access 4Number 4 held downThe app assigned to number 4 on the TV
Quick Access 5Number 5 held downThe app assigned to number 5 on the TV
Quick Access 6Number 6 held downThe app assigned to number 6 on the TV
Quick Access 7Number 7 held downThe app assigned to number 7 on the TV
Quick Access 8Number 8 held downThe app assigned to number 8 on the TV
The connection does not define the app: the assignment made on the TV does. So the connection number and the number assigned on the TV must match.

Quick Access setup (once per app)

The TV's original remote is not needed. Everything is done from Control4:

  1. Pick a free number from 1 to 8 for the app (e.g. YouTube = 1).
  2. Open the app on the TV using the TV remote in Control4 (Home, arrows and OK).
  3. With the app open, run the Long Press action for the chosen number in Composer (driver Actions tab; e.g. Long Press 1).
  4. The TV asks whether to assign the current app to that number: confirm with OK from Control4.
  5. Add the app's universal mini driver and bind it to the Quick Access connection with the same number (e.g. Quick Access 1).
  6. Test by selecting the app in Control4. Repeat for the other apps, up to 8.

It also works with the original remote: with the app open, hold the number and confirm.

  • Write down in the project which number holds which app.
  • The assignment is stored on the TV. If the TV is factory reset or replaced, redo the setup.
  • A short press on the number still works normally as a channel digit.
  • Quick Access is available on recent LG webOS TVs. On older models without this feature, these connections do not work.

Properties

PropertyDescription
Debug ModePrint = logs activity (turns itself off after 60 minutes).
Chave4Drivers license key for this driver.
ValidacaoRead only: license status (5-day trial, validated, blocked).
Power On Delay-MillisecondsTime the TV takes to power on. Commands sent during this time are queued and sent afterwards. Default 4000 (4 s).
Command Delay-MillisecondsInterval between consecutive commands (e.g. channel digits). Increase it if the TV misses commands.
Press-Release Command Delay-MillisecondsRepeat interval while a button is held (volume, channels, arrows). If the command keeps going after the button is released, increase this value.
Repeat CountHow many times each IR code is transmitted. Increase it if the emitter is far or poorly placed; decrease it if the TV executes a command twice.
Home Before AppYes = when an app is selected, the driver first sends the TV to the home screen (Smart TV) and only then opens the app. Required on models that ignore the app key while on an HDMI input.
App Launch Delay-MillisecondsTime between going to the home screen and the app key. Default 1500 (1.5 s). Increase it if the TV opens the home screen but not the app.
Long Press Time-MillisecondsHow long the number is "held" for the Quick Access connections and the Long Press actions. Default 2000 (2 s).
Driver VersionInstalled driver version.
Last Server Version / Server Version NotesLatest version available from 4Drivers and its notes.

Programming (Composer)

The Info button on Control4 screens and remotes opens the TV home screen.

In the driver Actions tab, the Long Press 1 to Long Press 8 actions send the held number, to assign and test Quick Access.

Besides the standard TV commands, the driver has an Emit IR Code command that sends any key from the list (e.g. Home, Q.Menu, Exit, Aspect Ratio, AV Mode, Simplink, captions, color keys). Useful for macros and custom buttons.

Limitations

Troubleshooting

SymptomWhat to check
TV does not respond at allEmitter placement over the TV's IR receiver, IR Sensor connection bound to the right port, and a valid license (Validacao).
Powers on but does not switch inputThe TV was still starting: increase Power On Delay-Milliseconds or enable Quick Start on the TV.
Commands lost in a sequenceIncrease Command Delay-Milliseconds.
Command executed twiceDecrease Repeat Count.
Volume keeps going after releaseIncrease Press-Release Command Delay-Milliseconds.
Opens the home screen but not the appIncrease App Launch Delay-Milliseconds.
Quick Access does not open the appCheck that the connection number matches the number assigned on the TV. If the TV just types the digit, increase Long Press Time-Milliseconds.
App does not openThe TV model/region may not have that app key, or the app is not installed.

For support, set Debug Mode = Print, reproduce the problem and send the log to 4Drivers (contato@4drivers.com.br).
